UPDATE 4/1/26
Our team responded to a report of a heavy infestation of Tussock Moth caterpillars at Paw Park. While caterpillar contact is generally not considered an emergency, some species can cause irritation to pets. If your pet appears uncomfortable, shows signs of pain, or has difficulty eating after contacting a caterpillar, you should seek guidance from your veterinarian.
If a pet ingests a caterpillar, it may experience symptoms such as drooling, vomiting, or swelling due to irritation or an allergic reaction. Because reactions vary depending on the animal and the species involved, prompt veterinary care is recommended if ingestion is suspected.
Out of an abundance of caution, Parks staff are treating the affected areas within the park to help reduce caterpillar activity.
During caterpillar season, we encourage pet owners to remain aware of their surroundings, keep dogs on marked paths where possible, and monitor areas where pets roam or explore.
Our goal is to maintain a safe and enjoyable park environment for all visitors. If you observe areas of concern, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department.
Original Story:
Sanford’s Paw Park will be closed from Wednesday, April 1st until Friday April 3rd to allow for treatment due to Tussock caterpillar treatment and control.
Located at 427 S. French Avenue, this park is beloved by pet owners in the city. In order to make sure that the park remains safe for our furry friends, the City will be using all-natural remedies.
Usually appearing around Oak Trees in Spring, tussock caterpillars can cause skin irritation for humans however, they are much more dangerous for dogs.
Paw Park is expected to reopen on Friday, April 3rd in the afternoon once treatment activities are complete and the area is ready for use. Should that change, we will provide an update.
